That's Canada's Parliament buildings in the back.
This is what the Rideau Canal looks like in winter.
Some people actually skate to school and work.
I'm not sure why, but there are a bunch of locks on one of the bridges that crosses the Canal... They all have couples' names on them. I did a quick search on the Internet and couldn't find anything... perhaps the keys have been thrown into the canal? Not sure.
One can only guess.
And, then I do the whole walk again the other way back to campus.
Three times a week.
(Yes, that's a person on a bike in the middle of winter.
Common in Ottawa; as are joggers/runners.)

There's a bridge in Paris over the River Seine where lovers attach a lock and throw the key over. My guess is some Quebecers (?) are trying to recreate that.

ReplyDeleteYou will find my love lock on there!
Well we do not have a car so we walk or take the bus wherever we need to go! The big one though is walking to the grocery store since the walk back is for a sure a work out with all the food!
ReplyDeleteIt's modeled after the Pont des Arts in Paris. You put your lock on the railing, lock it, and throw the key into the river. It's meant to symbolize everlasting love, since your lock can't be removed. Corey and I actually have a lock on there...ours is a red one on the side facing away from the Parliament buildings. Take a look next time and let me know if you find it! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's always so hard for me to squeeze gym time into my day too! I try to do late night yoga or weekend walks. It looks like your walk is beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteWow...Rideau Canal in winter is breathtaking!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Ottawa! I can't wait to come back to Canada just to visit the city again! :) And the locks are inspired by the ones in Paris, but Krissie already explained it better than I would have. :)
